Betrayed by P.C. Cast My rating: 1 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads I rated the previous instalment 2 stars, so how could it get any worse? Oh. Ugh. I'm not even going to bother. Just remind me to never read anything from PC Cast ever again. View all my reviews

Review: The Mark of Athena

Image
The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 4/5 stars! The best book in this series so far!!!!!!! YAY FOR PERCABETH :) I'm still getting over the ending. Like. What. Wow. My feels for Percabeth have heightened by 10009900000x. I loved the moment where Jason and Piper met Hercules! Classic Riordan. View all my reviews

Book Blogger Hop #1

23rd - 29th - If you are at a really good point in a book and the phone rings or the door bell rings, do you stop reading or let the phone or door bell go unanswered? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews ) ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Who would do that?  That being said... nobody knocks. And I deleted all my social media (except Goodreads).  There's rarely anything that can tear my way from a book. Even in class (oops) I still manage to have a sneaky read. I love it so much.

Bookish (and not-so Bookish) Thoughts #2

Image
Greetings, my 7 viewers. This post is kinda going to be like a Daily Log. So if you don't like these; you may want to skip. Bookish thoughts this week: Have you ever been in such a book hangover, you can't bring yourself to read another book? I recently reread Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas, and even though Empire of Storms is sitting next to me, I can't bring myself to read it. QoS was just... so good. It had a happy ending, and was quite the emotional rollercoaster. I decided to read Obsidian to try and avoid an oncoming bookish-slump. I read about 30 pages and gave up. I'm about to read the Sun is Also a Star via audiobook, so finger's crossed that helps me too. Not so bookish thoughts: You know, the usual. Depression. That's about it. I'm not really hungry anymore, and I've lost 5kg in a week. Oops. I'm also not wearing makeup. Or doing my hair. #AllNatural baby. I DID just remember: I cleaned my entire room a few days ago.

Review: It's Not Summer Without You

Image
It's Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 2 or maybe 3/5 stars. It depends if you can handle: - such immaturity - pining pointlessly - a lack of plot but heaps of daydreaming about boys I wanted to shoot my brains out. She's so vain?????????? And continues to be quite bitchy?????????????? Seriously, all I could think was: #FirstWorldProblems View all my reviews

Review: Monsters of Men

Image
Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.5/5 stars. THIS WAS INTENSE. So much was happening, but similar events- it made me excited initially, but gradually it made me go into a mini book slump. It was written very well, such an intriguing format to read. Very original. View all my reviews

Waiting on Wednesday #3

Image
Heya guys! Happy Hump Day. So today's book meme is about what I'm eager for (regarding book releases). After going through my Goodreads TBR shelf, I have found 4 books I can't wait to be released soon (at least... for Australia)! Books I'm Waiting For: 1.  The Awakening of Ren Crown  (Ren Crown #1)   by   Anne Zoelle   2.  Genuine Fraud  by   E. Lockhart I'm so excited for her new book- I absolutely loved We Were Liars. 3.  Juniper Lemon's Happiness Index  by   Julie Israel   This seems like a refreshing contemporary novel. I don't read many, but I thought I may give it a shot! 4.  The Waking Land (The Waking Land Series)  by   Callie Bates I AM MOST EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK TO BE RELEASED!!! I hope you enjoyed my list; tell me what you're exited for! Has anybody heard more news about John Green's new book?

Review: Dark Reunion

Image
Dark Reunion by L.J. Smith My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 4/5 stars. Bonnie is such an important character in this, oh my??? Honestly thought Bonnie and Damon would get together. But I'm glad they didn't. BUT IM PISSED THAT THERE WASNT A CONCLUSION TO THE LOVE TRIANGLE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????????? This would've been a 5/5 stars if the book had more of Elena… alive. I love that she's completely forgotten about her family, FYI. That thought hasn't crossed her mind in like, 2 books. Totally unlike her character in the TV show. They're like polar opposites from each other. Is it silly of me to still hope for Delena? How could Smith do this to me?!? Just have Damon give Elena is coat and walk off into the woods. IM DYING I NEED TO KNOW WHO SHE BELONGS WITH. WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO FIGURE OUT. View all my reviews

Review: The Fury

Image
The Fury by L.J. Smith My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 4.75/5. I just can't give it that extra .25 star, and I don't know why. I just know it isn't exactly a favourite like my other 5 star books. Or maybe it is. I may change it in a couple of hours. This book was haunting. It had brilliant writing, and nothing was predictable. It had angst and comfort, and tbh the romance was at its low. But I'm not complaining. Because we got an amazing dose of Katherine. Oh, Katherine. What a treat she is. Absolutely phenomenal- her hostage situation at the end was the most edging thing I think I've ever read. I could not put the book down. Amazing sequel! I have high hopes for the next! View all my reviews

Review: The Awakening / The Struggle

Image
The Awakening / The Struggle by L.J. Smith My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 4.5/5 stars. Oh… my… god. Well that was… brilliant!!! I really didn't like the first book. The edition I read, had books 1&2. It was slow, predictable, and every girl was shallow and 2 dimensional. Especially Eleana. She was the biggest Valley Girl of them all. Which isn't a bad thing; I'm not shaming (too much). It's just… the two Salvatore's, fall for her with some profound, emotional attachment… meanwhile we see first hand that she's… vapid but annoyingly naive??? And then book 2 started; AND IN CAME DAMON. Y E S. God bless, Damon Salvatore. Can you tell I'm a big Delena fan? No? Let me emphasise it one more time; I LOVE DAMON. A much more interesting character, with unpredictable motives overall. He's dark and not as cringey with instalove like Stefan, and tbh I totally feel hi

Review: If I Stay

Image
If I Stay by Gayle Forman My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.5/5 stars. I tried to watch the movie 2 years ago; but didn't even make it through 20 minutes. I was so confused and it seemed like she was chasing some bad guy that wasn't really meant for her. I was bored and didn't understand the point. But reading the book was a lot more interesting (but still a meh overall; just in comparison to the movie). Adam seemed like a better character than he was in the movies, too. You saw the meaning behind their relationship already way more than in the short amount of the movie I saw. It was good: but overhyped. View all my reviews

Review: The Eternity Cure

Image
The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3/5 stars. Well written. Exciting plot line. Great characters. It was just too drawn out. View all my reviews

Review: Spark

Image
Spark by Rachael Craw My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 4/5 stars. Classic YA. Simple romance. Idk what else to say? Great. It won't be very memorable, besides the fact that I enjoyed reading it. The story was written wonderfully and clearly, which is all I've ever asked (besides being interesting- and this was). Review: The Mime Order

Image
The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3/5 stars. So it may be a low rating because some ASSHOLE who sat near me in the library decided it's appropriate to have a 3 freaking hour long phone call. Jerk. I could barely focus on this book. But I really loved the ending, where Jaxon and Paige had a show down. Yaaaas. View all my reviews

Review: The Thousandth Floor

Image
The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.5/5 stars. This was super disturbing. Yes, I'm referring to Avery and Atlas. As well as Leda. What the actual fuck. This WAS like Gossip Girl- but all the Serena angsty bits. And guess what I hated about GG? Anything to do with Serena or Dan. I've always been a Chuck and Blair kind of girl. Leda was one hell of an antagonist. I guess she's Jenny after things go dark? Or Blair. But Blair never kills anybody. (Seriously wtf). Anybody on the lower floor bored me. I won't say much else about them. It doesn't matter that Avery and Atlas a step siblings. They are still related. Their parents like to bone each other. That isn't cool for them to start boning either. We don't really hear what Atlas thinks, but for Avery-- her love is so superficial. They're nasty, unloveable characters. But I've

Review: My Life Next Door

Image
My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 2.5/5 stars. This book was fine. It was worth a 50%. You've gotta like a few things to accept this book for anything higher than 2.5/5 stars: 1. Instalove. This is a major component of the novel that I was truly shocked about. Like the timing. This must be a world record for how quickly they "truly" fell in love. 2. A book that doesn't really have a point, besides the romance. This book kind of went off track than what I imagined, and I reached 50% and realised this wasn't about the build up of their romance?? It was this odd, not really grounded suspense about a character called Clay. 3. You've gotta like the simplicity and predictability of Romeo and Juliet. I don't think this point needs to be explained. I'm not mad at the book, it wasn't dreadful by any standards. I just feel that it had no

Book Beginnings #3

Emerge by Tobie Easton  "“I can’t swim. No matter how sparkly and tempting that water is. No matter how it glistens in the sunlight, ripples in the California breeze, or reflects the swaying palm trees. One quick dip and my legs will go poof." This book seems like it has a pretty setting!!! And how funny that the first lines are about a mermaid not being able to swim??? I can't wait to read this!

Review: A Change Your Life One Day at a Time: The Ultimate Manual for Living a Long, Healthy and Happy Life

Image
A Change Your Life One Day at a Time: The Ultimate Manual for Living a Long, Healthy and Happy Life by Dr. Ilona Boniwell My rating: 5 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads Some of these are questionable: like "get hitched". Obviously if I'm reading this, there isn't a lot of that going on. Aside from that, this is such a fun book. I've borrowed it from my library but I think I'll need to buy it! I'm totally going to stick by it. Such a good book for anybody, like me, likes mindfulness therapy. It's something I would definitely find helpful when I'm not with my psychologist. What's Next Thursday #1

Happy Thursday! Today's Blog Meme is discussing what books I'm want to read next, but can't decide which one to read. Hopefully you guys can tell me which in the comments below!!! I want to read a stand-alone contemporary YA, with romance and angst. I usually read fantasy novels with heaps of sequels, but I felt like changing it up :) 1.  The Romantics 2.  Alex, Approximately 3.  The Upside of Unrequited 4.  We Are Okay 5.  Under Rose-Tainted Skies Have you read any of these? Which should I read next?

Reader Workouts #2

So for this Tuesday's Book Meme, I'll be talking about how I just reached my Goodreads Reading Goal of 150 books for this year!!! How are you guys going with your reading goals? How many books did you pledge/aim to read?

Review: The Ask and the Answer

Image
The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.5/5 stars. This was so intense! Wowza! This kind of reminded me of Insurgent, where Viola and Todd have different political ideas on how to solve the end of the world?? But Todd is the Tris in this book. Annoying oblivious, and doesn't listen to anyone. Oh well! View all my reviews

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #4

Image
Hey guys, this week I'm going to try and do my book blog memes. Woo! Be sure to comment to tell me your thoughts. I'm on winter break at the moment, which will only be brief because I signed up for an extra holiday class at uni. Recently I've been reading my free kindle ebooks that are horrible.  No... they're not horrible. Just trashy. It's all those funny romance novels. But they're fun quick reads, and now I've reached my goal of 150 books for this year! Next up I'll be rereading the Throne of Glass series, and the Raven Cycle. What have you been reading this week?

Review: Holding Up the Universe

Image
Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.75/5 stars. This story started with some really fucked up scenes. Like Libby writing she's fat in the school's toilets/walls. Um. Angst overload. Besides that, this story was so interesting to read. I've never heard of the face blindness Jack has. Jack was more bearable to read than Libby. Libby and I think similarly, but she has some weird ass coping mechanisms. This story was written in a good enough way. It could've had prettier phrases, but overall it was a splendid contemporary YA. View all my reviews

Review: Finding Audrey

Image
Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella My rating: 2 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 2.5/5 stars. Okay so I'm not really going to rant about this book. It was fine. Basically; nothing happened. It was an accurate portrayal of the thought process of certain mental illnesses, like my own, and I just didn't feel like reading about it. I read to escape that. - Audrey thinks like I do, except for saying the term 'stupid'. - Audrey is pretty 2D. I hate that her mum is one of those people who listen to the Daily Mail, dear god. - Linus was poorly written. - IT HAD SCRIPTS IN IT. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SCREAMED OVER SCRIPTS BEING THE NEW FAD. NO. I'M CHOOSING A NOVEL FOR IT'S MEDIUM. THERE'S ALREADY SUCH A WIDE CHOICE (ebooks, audiobooks, hard, soft, paper, etc)-- WHYYYYYYY WOULD I FEEL THE NEED TO READ A SCRIPT? IT'S LAZY WRITING. AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT. Besides that, it was fine. I feel indiffere

Review: Carve the Mark

Image
Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth My rating: 2 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 2/5 stars. Sorry, VRoth. I love you. But this sucked. I was bored. It just wasn't my thing. I didn't feel excited ever. There were 2 sentences I liked in the book, I highlighted them for the review, but to be frank- I'm not bothered. I feel like nothing happened for 10000% of this book. I know for sure nothing happened in the first 1/3. The reason I didn't like this was because I was conscious I was reading he words for every second. I was never immersed into the story. Don't you guys hate that feeling? Or is it just me feeling that way for certain books? View all my reviews

Review: The Bone Season

Image
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon My rating: 5 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 5/5 stars. Damn I've been handing out a lot of 4's and 5's this week-- I promise I'm not usually this easy going. I've just had some incredible luck! I honestly thought I'd get bored of this book. It had the high fantasy of ToG, and when I saw the maps and FREAKING GLOSSARY (which intrigued me but I reached he 4th page and was dying)-- I thought I was doomed. I've seen this book everywhere in bookstagram and GR. I'm glad I can finally say I've read it. Because, my friends; THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!! The protag is what I wish Cel/Aelin would've been in ToG (what a shit character omfg I won't get started I'm sorry)-- Paige was so interesting, and well developed. I loved the plot twists-- it was intense every second. You could really feel yourself being submersed into the realm they live in.

Review: The Knife of Never Letting Go

Image
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads 3.5/5 stars. It was really interesting! I loved the crazy and well thought world that has been created!! The only thing tbh that I'm deducting stars for is the dog being able to talk- it was disturbing and made he drama seem less effective. View all my reviews
